Maybe it's just that this week was Tolkien's birthday making me think it, but Papa kind of puts me in mind of Tom Bombadil.
Nothing in particular that does so, mind you, so maybe it's just wishful thinking. Tom Bombadil was the best character from LOTR to NOT make it into the movies. :p

Tom Bombadil is a fantastic character- Yet so misunderstood:) – Now Papa is not Bombadil, just an ordinary guy that happened to be in the right place at the right time.

Tia reminds me of a sprite I once wrote. Very much in the present, but capable to doing great good and being useful. Papa strikes me as the essence of "good humanity"; he might take Bean's sword, but only to make it safe as he carries Bean to safety.

Now while Beans is sleeping, the old man could take the sword from Beans:
"After all, who gave this dangerous weapon to the kid to play with? Hmm?"

the young Hero find “the sword” and must proof himself against a huge Monster. Hmm.. with the last Page i hear the “Bossfight Theme” from Secret of Mana.
