I had the same thought… Slight disconnect between Thaddeus' speech and Bean's response.

If the castle has been abandoned or the Prince no longer wants to be the prince and has abdicated, then the past tense makes sense. Also, Thaddeus could be talking that way because Bean is somehow related to him. Or the man is dead, but Thaddeus holds a particular distaste for dragon hunters. He is a dragon, after all.
Lastly, Bean needs a warm, fluffy cloak or coat. Seriously, he's making me cold!
